Gundam RG XARX-ZERO: Legendary Director's New Anime Promises to Revolutionize the Franchise in 2027

The Gundam franchise has just announced a historic shift. During San Diego Comic-Con, Bandai Namco revealed the new anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, with a confirmed release date in 2027. The project is being directed and written by Kenji Kamiyama, the acclaimed creator known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

This project isn't limited to an animated series. It kicks off the so-called RG Project, a multimedia universe where productions across different media share the same timeline across generations. The recently announced game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is also part of the same initiative, portraying the same universe roughly 100 years after the events of the anime.

The Apocalyptic Threat and the Origin of the Gundam ZERO

The story takes place in a brand-new timeline, far removed from the traditional Universal Century. It all begins when an intergalactic entity grants humanity revolutionary technologies, such as gravity control and faster-than-light communication. Less than ten years later, that same entity collapses, giving rise to a hostile ecosystem dubbed the "Apocalypse."

After three months of intense battles in Earth's orbit, humanity loses Earth and is forced to live in space and on the Moon. The protagonist Ray Azumi, a war orphan voiced by Takeo Otsuka, awakens on the lunar surface and takes the helm of the Gundam ZERO, an experimental unit developed to fight the Apocalypse.

Behind the Scenes and the Director's Vision

Kenji Kamiyama revealed that he took on the challenge of rebuilding Gundam from scratch without clinging to old conventions. By breaking away from the traditional rules of factions and conventional warfare, the director sought the essence of what makes Gundam so compelling to create a completely original experience.
