The bank heist game franchise PayDay is getting a movie adaptation. Swedish developer and publisher Starbreeze has inked a deal with production company DJ2 Entertainment to turn the intellectual property into a live-action action film.
The chosen studio is known in the industry for its work on successful game-to-screen adaptations, including the feature film Sonic the Hedgehog and the animated series project based on Tomb Raider.
The Franchise's History and What to Expect from the Adaptation
Originally released in 2011 with PayDay: The Heist, the game established the premise of a cooperative shooter centered on four masked criminals pulling off complex heists on banks, armored cars, and jewelry stores. Success solidified in 2013 with PayDay 2, which amassed tens of millions of players and kept an active community going for over a decade through constant content updates.
The franchise's narrative follows the PayDay gang as they plan and execute clandestine operations in the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., taking on police forces, SWAT teams, and private mercenaries. This narrative structure, focused on adrenaline-fueled action and strategic planning, serves as direct source material for the movie adaptation.
Previous Hollywood Experience and Brand Expansion
DJ2 Entertainment specializes in adapting games for TV and film. Beyond SEGA's blue hedgehog franchise, the company maintains active partnerships to adapt other video game titles, such as Disco Elysium, Life is Strange, and It Takes Two.
The movie announcement coincides with the market gearing up for PayDay 3, a new chapter in the main franchise focused on expanding the cooperative experience. The move aims to position the PayDay brand across multiple entertainment formats, broadening the reach of the heist universe beyond the games' core audience.
